The cost of jetting off can play a much bigger role in deciding where to go for some more than others – but luckily, there are loads of places out there where your money will stretch further. Who said budget needs to stand in the way of that mega trip you’ve had your eye on?
To shed some light on the more affordable destinations to visit this year, we’ve got some insight from the 18th annual Post Office Travel Money’s ‘Holiday Money Report’.
This research incorporates a change in currency value compared to sterling, as well as the local price of eight tourist essentials (coffee, beer, cola, wine, water, suncream, insect repellent and a three course meal), to determine which destinations are most affordable.
And claiming the top spot for 2024, it’s Hoi An in Vietnam! The total cost for those tourist buys is just £51.18 (€59.67, $64.54), with insect repellent and local beer being cheaper than anywhere else on the list.
Cape Town came in second place, with a total cost of £54.35 (€63.37, $68.54), and a three-course meal for two people costing less than £35 (€40.81, $44.14)! Given the Mother City is home to all these marvellous restaurants, that is pretty impressive.
One spot that might come as a bit of a surprise is Tokyo, which ranked in fourth place. But the numbers don’t lie – a glass of wine in the Japanese capital is only £3.62 (€4.22, $4.57), and a bottle of water? That’s a measly 61p (71¢, 77¢)
