It seems like '80s-set and nostalgia-provoking Stranger Things tugs at the heartstrings of Netflix watchers all around the world—at least according to a new study by insurance company Budget Direct. The website dove into Google data to find out which Netflix-produced titles have been mostly searched for in every country over the past 12 months. The results obviously vary by destination, but one thing is certain: with a total of 7,420,860 searches, Stranger Things is the most popular Netflix original in the whole wide world.
A few notable findings: The most searched-for Netflix original movie globally is The Irishman (2,484,160 searches) and the United States boasts the most searched-for top title in every genre (drama, comedy, documentary, anime, reality show, stand-up and kids show). Speaking of genres, within Europe, over 90% of countries have the same taste when it comes to Netflix comedies (Orange is the New Black), anime (The Seven Deadly Sins), documentary (Tiger King—duh) and reality show (Love is Blind).
Overall, Stranger Things took first place, the most searched-for Netflix original series across 81 countries. Spanish heist drama La Casa de Papel (Money Heist in certain markets) took second place, the most popular show across 65 countries, and Polish-American fantasy drama The Witcher came in third, topping the list across 30 countries.
