This show revisits the remarkable career of Baya Mahieddine (1931–1998), a self-taught artist who associated with André Breton, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, who not only inspired her, but also found inspiration for his work in hers. Known largely for figurative paintings, Mahieddine—who went by Baya—employed bold colors, patterns and motifs that hewed closely to North African folk-art traditions.
