The auteur of My Own Private Idaho is as skilled with a brush as he is in directing behind the camera, though his engagement with painting has been an on-again, off-again endeavor over the years. As his latest efforts attest, however, the switch is definitely set to “on” with these dreamlike canvases that seem to allegorize Van Sant’s life in L.A. Washy scenes of aimlessly drifting male nudes suggest that his fixation on queer themes applies to canvas as well as film.
