Halil Altindere, “Space Refugee”

The Turkish artist’s installation recalls the story of Muhammed Ahmed Faris, a Syrian cosmonaut who earned famed as a national hero by journeying aboard the Soviet space station Mir in 1987. In Altindere’s hands, Faris’s tale becomes a device for reframing the plight of the refugees escaping Syria's civil war.
