With the Studio Museum in Harlem closed while construction is underway on a new, David Adjaye-designed home on W 125th Street, MoMA PS1 has assumed hosting duties for the Harlem institution’s annual artists in residence exhibition. This year’s show—a meditation on place and time and their impact on memory, identity and popular culture—includes Allison Janae Hamilton’s immersive installation about mysticism in the Old South; Tschabalala Self large-scale mixed-media encomiums to street life in Harlem; and Sable Elyse Smith’s two- and three-dimensional works delving into injustices of the mass incarceration.
