In 1967, before Neil Armstrong was on the radar, it seemed the first moonwalkers would be Virgil “Gus” Grisson, Edward White and Roger Chaffee of Apollo 1. But a fire during a routine flight test in 1967 destroyed both the ship and its men. This exhibit takes a close look at these astronauts, with memorabilia ranging from Chaffee’s flight jumpsuit to the death announcement sent to his family, as well as the USS Intrepid's role as a space-capsule recovery ship.
