Restraint is precisely what makes this quietly harrowing documentary, composed mostly of interviews with former Khmer Rouge henchmen, so uncommonly devastating. The mission here isn’t justice so much as witness; it’s startling how many aging Cambodians testify to their own complicity. The big get is Pol Pot’s No. 2, Nuon Chea, a frail old man who’s unrepentant about the genocidal purges—until he hears that codirector Thet Sambath’s own family was massacred. In that moment, ideology melts into empathy, and the film manages to stare into the face of evil without resorting to anger or judgment.—Eric Hynes
