Some folks have accused this meta noir set in the hinterlands of Minnesota (no matter that the title refers to a city in North Dakota) as both condescending and the most overrated film of the ’90s. They are deluded, and we choose to ignore them. Frances McDormand has never done finer work, and the film is affectionate toward its lead character despite the obvious affectations.
