The Son's Room

Sappiness takes the place of Moretti’s usual comic bombast in this filmic equivalent of a black-velvet painting of a sobbing clown. After a psychoanalyst’s 17-year-old child dies in a diving accident, the rest of the film rings false, from the music to the mise en scène. It may have won the Palme d’Or, but this film is lachrymose pap.
