Emerging in 2009 as part of Das Racist—the arch rap crew behind “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell”—Himanshu “Heems” Suri effortlessly transitioned from novelty sensation to genuine force in the local hip-hop scene. The Queens rapper released a fiery debut solo LP, Eat, Pray, Thug, in 2015, and recently joined with British actor-MC Riz Ahmed to form the irreverently titled project Swet Shop Boys, which juxtaposes apathetic comedy with scathing social commentary. Here Heems plays a benefit for progressive media nonprofit Unity Productions Foundation.
