If you wanted create an inviting, musically adventurous music series in New York City, downtown Manhattan, with its skyscraper alleys and storefronts shuttered after 6pm, probably wouldn't be the place. And yet, those are the environs River to River thrives in. The festival invigorates southern tip of the island by bringing contemporary classical, folk, world and electronic music, and dance to its pristine waterfront venues and serene atriums. The jewel of the series is the Bang on a Can Marathon, a daylong lineup of top contemporary classical music talent. This year, look for several shows dedicated to the music of composer Terry Riley. At the excellent price of free, the shows are a good excuse to explore a part of the city that, unless you're a Wall Streeter, might otherwise go unseen.
