Goodbye New York, Goodbye Heart

Cyberreality sings a siren’s song: Few artists can resist trying to represent it, yet the results are almost always an aesthetic shipwreck. Australian playwright Lally Katz and director Oliver Butler wind up in the rocks with this painfully uninvolving effort. The setup has bite: After some future collapse, an online version of New York (the only Gotham still standing) attracts ghoulish virtual tourists. But the show’s initial burst of pessimistic invention doesn't develop into real commentary. System fail.—Helen Shaw
