Time Out says

This is your opportunity to walk through beautiful Freshkills Park and marvel at how it once was a giant pile of trash. No really, it used to be a garbage dump.

Once the world’s biggest landfill, Freshkills Park has undergone a radical transformation since the final trash barge sailed away in 2001. Now you can frolic through 700 acres of closed trails, ponds and meadows in the massive man-made park at this preview event. Bring your bike and take a scenic ride or join a guided tour and learn about the park’s new phases. Shuttles are available from the Staten Island Ferry.
