The best things to do in Winchester

The best things to do in Winchester

Winchester is one of those cities that feels a bit like stepping back in time. Once the capital of England, it’s kept its traditional charm, even with all the trendy spots that have popped up there over the years. And that’s what makes it such a great place for a city break; beautiful architecture and winding lanes lead into streets lined with hip bakeries.  Part of its popularity is down to the city only being an hour’s train from London, and a short drive from the New Forest and the south coast, so you can head up for a full weekend, or just a perfect day out. We’ve carved out the perfect itinerary for Winchester, from river walks to brunch spots and indie shops to sunny beer gardens (and you can take it as slow as you like). Here are the best things to do in Winchester right now.  RECOMMENDED:📍 The ultimate guide to Hampshire🌳 The best places to visit in the UK🍝 The best restaurants in the UK

What to write about on Time Out?

What to write about on Time Out?

Remember to say whether you liked it, and why It sounds obvious, but conveying whether or not something is worth spending time and/or money on is the most important part of any review. If Time Out has reviewed it, there’s no need to agree with our critic, but if you do disagree, make sure you say why (preferably without calling us names). Pick out some details to back up your opinions Was the salmon a bit dry? Did the bartender give you enough time to browse the cocktail menu? Did Hamlet accidentally do a massive fart during his first monologue? These are the things that’ll make sure fellow Londoners take heed from your experience. Don’t go on a rampage Negative or neutral comments are just as welcome as positive ones, but an expletive-ridden tirade won’t lend you the air of someone whose opinion is worth listening to. If you've got beef with the manager of your local pub because they wouldn’t let you hold an impromptu karaoke night on a Tuesday, send them an email directly and deal with the problem head on. Keep it short – but not too short Nobody wants to read an essay about the history of the negroni, but then again, ‘this place is kinda okay’ definitely sits the wrong side of useful. Aim for 50-100 words, but maybe stop writing when smoke starts coming out of your keyboard. Add a picture to your posts Your Facebook friends probably don’t care about what you had for brunch, but hungry Time Out readers do! Attaching an image to your write-up may mean it takes a little longe

La Clique

La Clique

3 out of 5 stars

This review is from 2019. ‘La Clique’ returns for Christmas 2023 with a new line-up. Leicester Square isn’t usually known as a visitor destination for Londoners. But when Underbelly pops up its much-loved Spiegeltent there, and throws in legendary cabaret show ‘La Clique’, it’s worth a punt to venture back to tourist central.  Practical tips first. Get to the show early as it’s unreserved seating. Also, avoid the front row unless you want to get drenched (more on this later). Buy a drink from the bar before you go in to find your seats: you’ll feel more in the spirit of the night with a glass of wine, I promise.  The show has all the elements of cabaret you might expect: a garish host with a poor German accent, a bit of striptease, some scantily clad acrobats and a dash of fire-blowing to boot. One highlight was Zoe Marshall, an aerialist who somehow hangs from the roof only by her hair and manages to make it look rather effortless. The performance by Jamie Swan, which is a sort of ‘Magic Mike’ on water affair involving an iron-cast bathtub, also brings some much-needed uniqueness to the line-up. Swan kicks a lot of his watery spectacular into the audience so unless you’re the type who really loves the water rides at Thorpe Park, it’s best to sit a bit further back.  Sadly, several of the other acts, as well as the singing throughout, didn’t deliver. They felt a little tired and passé compared to other shows of this type, though you can appreciate it’s a tough gig when you’re

The Fore

The Fore

The Fore, a fancy workout studio which means business, is one of the newer additions to the King's Cross development. When you walk in you’ll feel like you’re in a lovely, tranquil lounge. The workout studio and co-working space is a place of true beauty. A smart juice bar area, plush sofas, plumped-up cushions and swathes of natural light welcome you in from the outside. But don't be fooled. You're about to walk up some steps and straight into London’s toughest exercise class.  Some context: I’m a self-confessed exercise class addict. I've tried all the major London studios: Another Space, 1Rebel, Digme, Barry’s Bootcamp, Frame... the lot. I love a good HIIT session and those places mentioned are all great in their own right. However, The Fore is the first exercise class I’ve ever done that I couldn’t actually finish because it was that exhausting. I’m now a regular and I still have to sit down at the end of each session to catch my breath. So in short, if you’re looking for a proper challenge, you’ll be in the right place here. Each class is 45 minutes and you’ll wish every single time that it was 30 because it’s honestly that hard.  Every session is broken down into three distinct elements. Firstly, you’ll get to know the ‘rip-trainer’ – a sword-style instrument that works your abs. Secondly, there is the TRX system. This is a mix of straps and stirrups to elevate your squats, lunges, planks and more. Last but not least is the Skillmill, a self-powered treadmill upon which

‘The Murdér Express: Jewel of the Empire’ review

‘The Murdér Express: Jewel of the Empire’ review

3 out of 5 stars

The next in line of London’s endless stream of immersive-dining-slash-theatre experiences is ‘The Murdér Express’, from Funicular productions, who’ve done a couple of similar shows at this same address over the last year. Hop aboard a ‘train’ at the fictional Pedley Street Station in 1937 and you'll be taken straight to the French town of Murdér - that is, of course, if you make it there alive. Someone aboard the carriage has committed a crime and it's for you to help the detective uncover the mystery. There are elements of this production that really work and others that do not. The train and its 1930s decor are both rather fun and the cocktails at the bar are decent. Once you have been welcomed aboard your carriage by a busy body ticket inspector, you'll be full steam ahead for the four-course dining experience, created by ‘MasterChef: The Professionals’ winner Laurence Henry. Though it’s perhaps not the most adventurous of menus, it is a general crowdpleaser with chicken ballotine for the main and a ‘strawberry and white chocolate jewel’ for dessert (known to most of us as a ‘mousse’). The immersive theatre experience happens around you as you eat and drink and it’s very involved. In short, don’t expect to have a quiet meal here with your beloved, as you will be interrupted by the characters all night long. The show is also very, very slapstick. Your train is ‘moving’ for most of the duration and as such you'll have views out of the window of ’90s Clip art-style images whi

Mindset Fitness

Mindset Fitness

Mindset is the next all-in-one training studio to arrive in Central London. Just five minutes walk from Waterloo Station, if offers boxing, HIIT, spin, weights or yoga. Most classes are mixed, but there are also female-only sessions available.  The studio itself is smart and modern. I did the Sets and Reps class which sells itself online as ‘the one to make Arnold proud’. Walking into a room that was mainly full of very muscly men, I didn't feel very Arnie at all, more like Melissa McCarthy in ‘Bridesmaids’, but the two trainers in the room were excellent and did everything they could to inspire and improve my technique. Their friendly instruction, regular encouragement and the constant moving from one exercise to the next, made it an extremely quick 45 minutes.  The changing facilities are clean but small and basic compared to some other London studios. You’ll need to bring your own conditioner, a padlock for your locker and £1 to rent a towel. The showers are hot and powerful, but require repeated pressing-on, which is a bit tiresome, especially if your arms are wobbling post-class.  These things all said, Mindset is good value if you're looking for the closest thing to personal training without the 1:1 price tag. Unlimited use will set you back £120 a month and includes free towels. If you want to try before you buy, there is also an intro offer which is £20 for three classes.

POPfit

POPfit

Pop Fit, one of the city’s newest arrivals on the ‘fancy gym class’ scene, is minutes from London Fields Overground station. You’re greeted by standard chic East London decor: think neon lighting, a lot of concrete and splashes of colour. There is also a Fabletics pop-up shop at the reception, so if you’ve ever wondered if Kate Hudson’s online-only gym gear is any good, you can check it out here. The classes on offer at Pop Fit are choreographed dance workouts rooted in upbeat music. Be prepared not just to move your body, but to shake it like a polaroid picture for the entire duration of your session. Choose from either the Signature or Dance Cardio classes if you want to really feel the burn, or try out Pop Core for low-impact strengthening. You don’t have to be a dancer to attend, but it will help if you have some natural rhythm. I am the not-so-proud owner of two very left feet, and I found some of the choreography was a little out of my comfort zone. That said, Gigi the teacher was incredibly enthusiastic despite my mal-coordinated efforts. You’ll finish your session with a dancer’s stretch and cool down, before heading off to the ace post-workout facilities. In true fancy gym style, you’ll find all the things you might need to make yourself presentable (read: no longer red-faced and sweaty) again including shampoo, conditioner, hair dryers and deodorant. Classes start from £14.

Champneys Forest Mere

Champneys Forest Mere

An hour and 20 minutes south-east of the capital, Champneys Forest Mere is located in Liphook, a leafy Hampshire village in the South Downs. Forest Mere is the only Champneys spa resort south of London (the other three are in Hertfordshire, Leicestershire and Bedfordshire) and is a rural retreat from city life – as you spot partridges run across the long and winding driveway, you realise you're a long way from the Northern Line and its scuttling rats. Open in 1995, but refurbished recently, Forest Mere is grand and attractive, what with its cream walls, dark wood, gold trimmings and rich-coloured carpets. The spa has undergone a significant makeover and now boasts state of the art facilities including a Thermal Poolside Suite - rooms of varying heat complete with tropical rain and cool mist showers, a new outdoor relaxation area with heated water beds, and a new heated outdoor Hydropool. Treatment-wise, Forest Mere offers everything from Elemis BIOTEC facials to Decleor body firming treatments, seaweed wraps to vibratory massage, but we recommend you opt for a signature Champneys therapy – the gold collagen facial is simply divine.  Overnight stays at Champneys Forest Mere start at £190 per person (prices vary depending on season) and include spa access, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Galvanize the girls or whisk Mum away for a day or two here and you'll feel a million dollars by the time you leave. Original review updated 17 April 2018
