It may seem hard to believe, but a new hotel that was built from the ground up has not opened in San Francisco since the InterContinental in 2008. The nearly decade-long dry spell is now coming to an end with three new and refurbished hotels opening around town.

Proper Hotel

Located in the heart of Mid-Market next to companies like Twitter, Uber, Square and Dolby, Proper Hotel (1100 Market St; 415-735-7777, properhotel.com) boasts four new restaurants and bars, including a rooftop bar and lounge called Charmaine’s. Designed by celebrity interior designer Kelly Wearstler, a room to yourself will put you back about $400 per night, but bunk rooms (yes, with bunk beds) start at around $200.

Hotel VIA

The 159-room Hotel VIA (138 King St; 415-200-4977, hotelviasf.com) opened across the street from AT&T Park this summer. In keeping with the techie neighborhood, amenities are downright futuristic: Guests’ phones double as keys and rooms include triple-play voice, video and data services. Each guest room is outfitted with modern, custom-made furniture, and the rooftop lounge features private cabanas and open-air fire pits.

Yotel San Francisco

In the historic Grant Building, Yotel (1095 Market St; yotel.com) will open in late 2017 with minimal, capsule rooms outfitted with top-notch amenities (think: monsoon rain showers, adjustable mood lighting and automated check-in kiosks) at affordable rates. Plus, restaurateur Daniel Patterson will open a new Alta CA on the ground floor.
