Whether you know it or not, art is all around us. You don't even have to visit a museum or pop by a swanky gallery to appreciate art – it's easily accessible no matter where we are. And if you think art is only for the art lovers, then you're wrong. Singapore Art Week (SAW) is bringing art to the community and making it accessible for everyone this year – pandemic or not. With over 100 programmes on physical and digital platforms, many can discover and experience art like never before at SAW 2021. This year’s edition will see a mall-wide art and retail experience happen at Funan where designers and labels collaborate with local artists. This will be the first sort of art activation held in a shopping mall.

But if you’re not planning to go out of your way to see some art, there are plenty of events, exhibitions and installations happening near shopping malls and areas – making it easier for you to get your culture fix while you’re satisfying your need for retail therapy. Whether you’re running some errands in Funan or chasing some discounts in Orchard Road, take a break from shopping to make some time and elevate your day with art.

WHERE Funan
WHEN January 22 – February 21

Want to enjoy art and also shop what you like from the experience? Creative Unions is the first mall-wide art activation in Singapore and the month-long programme is where art meets retail at Funan. Curatorial firm Neighbourhood, who are responsible for plenty of art and design community events, will be organising this programme that will see artists and the mall's tenants team up for art and retail projects including having capsule lines of clothing by fashion labels and artists working together.

Some of the in-mall events to look forward to under this programme include the Grafunkt Art Market which showcases seven unique home-ready art objects like a paper and wood room divider,  a colour-blocked rug and more produced by local artists like abstract painter Keith Teo, illustrator Bbblob and papercut artist Ashley Yeo to name a few. Other collaborations include LiHO Tea with digital artist Howie Kim who is creating a tumbler, contemporary artist Jahan Loh will work with Brompton Bicycle to create a custom bike, and a limited edition mug by PPP Coffee and line artist Alex Lim. Best part? All the items and objects from these collaborations are also for sale.

If you’re shopping at Love Bonito, be sure to make a trip to its changing rooms for a glimpse of artist Alison M. Low’s mixed media installation which transforms the space into a whimsical wonderland. If immersive new worlds are what you’re after, head to the rooftop where botanical artist and founder of mycological design studio Bewilder has taken over two of the rooms by urban farmers Edible Garden City with a trippy and psychedelic exhibition of mushrooms – complete with neon lights.

WHERE Across the 175 bus route
WHEN January 21 – February 3

Art truly is everywhere – and that includes this public art exhibition you can catch while on a bus ride. Board the 175 bus which will take you from east to west (and vice versa) and through areas like the shopping belt that is Orchard Road and the cultural precinct we know as Bras Basah – and keep your eyes peeled for exciting art installations by local artists at the bus stops. And since part of this exhibition can be experienced in Orchard Road, you can catch some culture as you shop your way through the street. The islandwide project curated by Amelia Abdullahsani and Merryn Trevethan makes art accessible to the community, from the city centre to the heartlands.

WHERE ION Orchard
WHEN January 22 – February 7

Take a breather from the retail bustle in ION and escape to Opera Gallery for a quick art fix during Singapore Art Week. Besides the best of retail and F&B, patrons can also experience art and culture in this popular mall. The central theme of this exhibition by New York-based Armenian oil painter Tigran Tsitoghdzyan revolves around the isolation experienced by many during the pandemic. His realistic paintings may look like photo manipulations but take a closer look and you will understand how the images are put together through a strenuous process of reflection, observation and thought.
