It may be tucked away within the open-air car park at Goldhill Centre – a ghost town after dusk – but don’t be put off by the dreary setting. This rustic Indonesian restaurant – with closely packed wooden tables, piped Indonesian music and a charming outdoor terrace – has been packing them in with its irresistible nasi ambeng offer.
This traditional Javanese dish ($36 for two, including a choice of soft drink or dessert) is served on a gargantuan tray with a mound of rice, crowned generously with fried mackerel fish steak, long beans and eggplant, fried tauhu, tempeh, potato cutlet and a choice of either the dense and dry beef rendang or spiced-up chicken.
Yes, they say it’s for two, but you can easily feed four by topping up your order with wallet-friendly items from the à la carte menu; we recommend the hearty and savoury sop buntut (oxtail soup) and the intensely flavoured sotong masak hitam (squid cooked in black ink). Reservations are highly recommended. Eve C
