Time Out says

The temple complex’s history states that Lord Murugan established his abode in this location following a feud with his parents. Kataragama is also known to be on of the 16 places visited by Lord Buddha during his visits to Sri Lanka. The Bodhi Tree located behind the Devalaya is one of the first eight saplings of the Sri Maha Bodhi and was planted around the 3rd Century BC. Three services are held daily around 5am, 11am and 7pm. Another element of attraction is the Kataragama Esala Maha Perehera, a ritualistic procession not to be missed.
