Beautiful beaches, rustic wilderness, mysterious legends and happening parties. The south eastern coast of Sri Lanka and its famous resort town Arugambay promise fun and adventure all year round.

Surf points… beach points…

The area is known for its great surf points: Arugambay Point, Whisky Point, Pottuvil Point, Panama Point, Crocodile Rock/Elephant Point, Peanut Farm, Lighthouse Point and Okanda Point. Although the perfect time for surfing here is considered to be from July to November, Whisky Point, Peanut Farm and even the Arugambay Beach especially promise great fun all year round. If you are not in a mood to surf, these beaches are great for morning yoga, tanning in the sun, building sandcastles or just a splash in the water.

The jumbos simply love this area, so you are bound to see many of them. Either in the protected National Parks, near beaches or simply strolling along the roadside you will catch a glimpse of these gentle giants. If you travel through the Pottuvil Road that runs through the Lahugala – Kitulana National Park during dawn and dusk, you are bound to see herds or at least a few lone bull elephants on the way. It’s a fantastic sight!

If you want more elephant action, head on a safari to the national parks, Kumana and Lahugala as well as Kanchikudichchiaru. In addition, you might even spot them during an evening at one of the reservoirs in the area such as Rottaikulam.

Live and Let Live: These elephants roam wild and free. Please do not approach, feed or pet them.

On the wilder side

The nature lover will love the forestry in the south east of Sri Lanka. The Lahugala-Kitulana and Kumana National Parks offer sights of elephants, deer, wild boars, birds, reptiles and much more. The picturesque panoramas witnessed from park vantage points will truly delight. You will see water bodies filled with resplendent water lilies, a truly beautiful sight. The Gal Oya National Park and Maduru Oya, although on the outskirts of the south east, are also accessible from Pottuvil.

The resort town of Arugambay is the centre of nightlife in the area. Especially during the season from July to November, there will be live action street food along the road, cafes and restaurants, while musical beats echo through the air. There are parties that start at dusk and end at dawn; it’s all about fun out here.

Did someone say history?

Yes, the south east coast has it all. Once a part of the grand Ruhunu Kingdom (200 BC), there are historical sites scatted throughout the province. From ancient monasteries to stone tablets hidden amidst shrub forestry and even ancient legends, there is much to discover. Some of the famous sights are Magul Maha Voharaya, Muhudu Maha Viharaya, Neelagiri Stupa, Sangamankandi Jungle Ganesh Kovil, Panama Kudumbigala Monastery and Okanda Kovil. Ask the area residents and explore, you might encounter many a mysterious place. On one of our explorations in Panama, we discovered the little-known Panama Wawevehera Raja Maha Viharaya, set within tangling forestry.
