Called the ‘Great Night of Lord Shiva’, it is believed to be the day the marriage of Shiva and Parvati took place. It also commemorates how gods Brahma and Vishnu conceded that Shiva was the most powerful in the Hindu divine pantheon. As it is also believed that lord Shiva manifested as a lingam on this night, the Shivalingam pooja is the most important temple ritual. Homes are purified and worshippers don clean or new clothes to perform rituals and fast. On this holy night, devotees throng to Shiva Kovils, where the statues of gods Shiva and Parvati are draped in silk.
