The ‘Aluth Avuruda’ in Sinhala or ‘Puththandu’ in Tamil dawns on this day. At the auspicious time, families clad in new clothes gather to boil milk, which is allowed to boil over symbolising prosperity. The lighting of the oil lamp, preparation of food and consuming the first meal in the new year are also done at auspicious times. Many other rituals and traditions are performed to bestow good fortune and health in the new year under the patronage and blessings of the elders in the family. Gifts are exchanged, plates of food are delivered to neighbours and traditional Avurudu games are played.
