Besides Japan’s wild and wacky KitKat flavours, you can also find some premium, high-quality varieties, too. The latest fancy KitKat set to hit shelves this November is the KitKat Mini Tokyo Cacao. The new KitKat is the first in the world to be made with locally-grown cacao from Tokyo's subtropical paradise of Ogasawara.

For those unfamiliar with Ogasawara, the island is roughly a 24-hour ferry ride from the city, but is still considered part of the Tokyo metropolis. Known mainly for its gorgeous beaches and wildlife, Ogasawara also cultivates produce such as lemons and cacao.

Cacao has been growing in Ogasawara since 2010 under the Hiratsuka Confectionery Company. It’s very rare to find cacao growing in Japan as the plant usually thrives in areas within 20 degrees north or south of the equator. However, cacao has been growing well in Ogasawara, which is located about 36 degrees north of the equator.

This rare Tokyo chocolate made from Ogasawara’s cacao has a mild flavour and strong, fruity aroma. You’ll be able to try it for yourself in the new KitKat bar available from Wednesday November 9
