While we’re all staying home due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, Tokyo-based photographer Kayoko Yamamoto has turned self-isolation into part of her work, launching her new project, ‘Balcony Shooting Tour’.

Combining her passion for photography with a relatable desire to see her friends and family, Kayoko has turned her loved ones into models for her new photo series. Kayoko directs her photoshoots from the street outside of her friends’ houses, phoning them to tell them to step onto their balcony or move to another room. After discussing the best positions, she starts taking photos of her friends – all from a safe distance at street level.

After posting the first photos on her Instagram account, Kayoko received a lot of positive comments, with users saying ‘This looks fun!’ or ‘This moved me to tears!’

Self-isolating and social distancing are tough to get used to, but the photoshoots are lighter moments for both Kayoko and her subjects. Kayoko says she enjoys bringing a smile to her friends’ faces, and for them, it’s a great opportunity to dress up, put on makeup, or just pull faces.
