Messy, stylish and impossible to keep up with, the after-dark scene in Japan’s big cities is always evolving. This list is your shortcut to a handful of the places that matter right now – from a bar-meets-art-gallery in the heart of Tokyo’s neon-lit Kabukicho to Kyoto’s most ambitious new cocktail den and a 24-hour hot-spring haven in Osaka.

  • Shibuya

A new undertaking by the team behind techno and house club Vent, Pass is a hideaway listening bar with a jazz-leaning but deliciously eclectic track selection and a custom sound system tuned to pin-drop perfection. Be sure to explore the line-up of exclusive cocktails such as the Smoky Lemon Sour, made with house-smoked salt, and browse the wine list, curated by the resident sommelier.

Local creative outfit En One Tokyo brings together DJ-spun tunes, tea-based drinks and meaty eats like hot dogs and LA galbi beneath shopping-and-dining hub Harajuku Quest. The industrial-style space is the work of Tokyo art-scene luminaries including illustrator Hiroshi Nagai and architect Nobuo Araki.

  • Shinjuku

The chaotic epicentre of Tokyo nightlife, Kabukicho is a place where anything can happen, and that’s historically certified – which is exactly why the neighbourhood has a bar named after Boccaccio’s fourteenth-century anthology. It’s art gallery with a regular rotation of shows upstairs, Heisei-rhinestoned para-para gal party below. Don’t forget to down a shot of their specially distilled ‘gal shochu’.

Osaka

An urban wellness retreat overlooking Umekita Park right next to Osaka Station, Umekita Onsen Ren invites you to rejuvenate both body and mind whatever the hour. Besides baths fed by natural hot spring water, you’ll find saunas, massage booths and meditation rooms accessible around the clock. There’s also an open-air infinity pool with views of the Umeda skyline.

Kyoto

Cherished as a sanctuary by dance music fans across Kansai, this indie club by the Kamo River keeps things real with programming that highlights acts from local labels like NC4K and PAL.Sounds alongside international visitors. Stay until dawn to see the morning light flow in through the sizeable window behind the DJ booth.

Known for his Taipei haunt Lab, ranked 57th on the 2025 Asia’s Best Bars list, Kyoto-born Takafumi Makita recently set up his second shrine to experimental cocktails in a beautifully renovated old house in Gion. The imaginative concoctions at Lab Kyoto lean on local ingredients from myoga ginger and dried persimmon to hinoki cypress and agarwood.
