Lovers of classic chocolate bar Breakaway, better get stockpiling. After 54 years, the bar is being axed by its maker Nestlé. RIP – kids’ lunchboxes will never be the same again.

Breakaway was first launched way back in 1970 but will be taken off sale in March of this year. And it isn’t the only treat being cut by Nestlé: Yorkie Biscuit Bars are also being scrapped. Nope, not Yorkie bars – they’re apparently ‘staying for good’ – but the biscuit version. Which, erm, we didn’t know existed. Tough to be sad about that one.

About the axing of Breakaway, a spokesperson for Nestlé said: ‘We know fans will be disappointed to see it go, but it’s time for us to say goodbye to Breakaway.

‘We have seen a decline in the sales of Breakaway over the past few years and unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to discontinue it.

‘By saying goodbye to Breakaway, we can focus on our best-performing brands, as well as develop exciting new innovations to delight consumers’ tastebuds.’

And Breakaway isn’t the only classic British sweet to have been coldly axed by Nestlé in recent months. Back in November we were told that after 64 years silky, chewy Caramacs would also be discontinued.

But it isn’t all bad news in the world of confectionary. Last summer Cadbury brought back its beloved chocolate coins, Quality Street announced the return of the coffee crème and Cadbury launched an all-new Cream Egg bar.

Did you see that this surprising brand is one of Britain’s fastest growing supermarket chains?

Plus: this surprising seaside town has been named Britain’s ‘most depressing’ place to live.
