There's always a risk of crime wherever you go, but some vacation destinations are riskier than others. To help travelers plan smarter, a recent analysis by Vivint examined FBI National Incident-Based Reporting System data across 25 top U.S. travel cities, evaluating summer burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft rates per 100,000 residents to reveal which destinations offer the most peace of mind for your getaway.

For vacationers seeking minimal risk, mountain escapes and coastal cities are the safest bet. Park City, Utah, emerged as the safest overall summer destination, recording a composite property crime rate of just 136 per 100,000 residents during peak travel months.

California’s coast also proved exceptionally secure for summer visitors. Both San Diego and Santa Barbara tied for the number two spot, each boasting a low crime rate of 139 per 100,000. Charleston (156), West Palm Beach (158) and Boston (181) round out the top five.

Several of these safe cities are trending even lower. West Palm Beach recorded a 34-percent reduction in summer property crime since 2022—the largest drop among all analyzed cities—while Santa Barbara fell by 18-percent.

On the other end of the spectrum, several major vacation hubs have seen spikes in property crime. Honolulu, Hawaii, registered the highest summer property crime rate at 442 per 100,000 residents—more than three times Park City’s rate—driven largely by high larceny numbers (943 per 100,000). Other higher-risk destinations include Seattle (415), Philadelphia (408), Denver (401), Nashville (398) and San Antonio, TX (394). Miami saw property crime surge by 60-percent since 2022.

Nationwide, burglaries run 4.7-percent higher from June through August as empty homes present easy targets. Whether choosing a quiet haven like Park City or visiting higher-density urban centers, Vivint recommends locking up rental properties, staying alert and securing your primary home to ensure a smooth, worry-free summer vacation.
