Just four hotels in North America made the list, and this historic California oasis is among them.

When the 2026 rankings of the World’s 50 Best Hotels were unveiled at Les Salles du Carrousel in Paris, European and Asian properties unsurprisingly dominated the spotlight, with Rosewood Hong Kong claiming the top spot globally. North America, on the other hand, claimed just four entries overall: three in Mexico and exactly one in the United States.
Taking the number 22 spot—ahead of Maroma in Riviera Maya at 47, Las Ventanas al Paraíso in Los Cabos at 25 and One&Only Mandarina in Riviera Nayarit—San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara stands as the sole U.S. property to make this year's main list. (Two fellow California hotels appear on the extended list of 51 to 100).
Described by judges as an "all-season oasis in California’s chicest beach town," San Ysidro Ranch is a distinct, self-contained retreat in the Montecito foothills. While coastal marine layers often shroud nearby beaches just five minutes away, the ranch routinely enjoys bright sunshine over its acres of fragrant, lush landscaping.

The historic estate dates back to 1893, evolving from a 19th-century citrus farm into a discrete retreat that hosted Winston Churchill and served as the honeymoon setting for JFK and Jackie Kennedy. Ty Warner acquired the property in 2000, outfitting the cottages with curated antiques, hand-picked art, French wallpaper and stone fireplaces for foggy evenings.
San Ysidro Ranch stands out for its all-inclusive luxury. Nightly rates cover all dining, resort fees and parking, allowing a seamless stay without extra add-ons. The ranch offers destination fine dining at The Stonehouse with craft cocktails, live music and deep cellars at the Speakeasy. And perhaps best of all, it offers unmatched privacy. The historic enclave is popular with local Montecito regulars, Angelenos weekenders and global travelers alike.
San Ysidro Ranch delivers an effortless blend of historic provenance, extreme privacy and California coastal elegance that no other American hotel matched this year.
