Visiting a place you’ve read about in a book or seen in a movie is some of the most exciting traveling there is. It’s great to finally see the place you’ve thought about so much. And while many classic sites get included on lists (Bodega Bay for Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds or Prince Edward Island from Anne of Green Gables), our list focuses on filming locations from just the last year or two—and in some cases, for movies that aren’t even released yet. This is the freshest of the fresh! Enjoy the chance to “set jet” (yes, set-jetting is an actual travel trend) and visit these movie sets (or TV filming sites) for yourself.

The Netflix series Outer Banks is supremely bingeable, and you can follow the footsteps of its treasure-hunting teens at several spots in South Carolina. The Midsummer Night’s soiree was filmed at the five-star Kiawah Island Golf Resort, while the UNC Chapel Hill Law Library was actually the Gaillard Center, a live concert venue. That beautiful lighthouse you remember? It’s the Morris Island Lighthouse.

Some of the more recognizable aspects of Season 4 of Stranger Things (released last summer) were filmed in Albuquerque. Want to skate where El threw a roller skate the girl bullying her at the rink? Well, that’s Skate-O-Mania where the color scheme is just as 1980s as you could ever hope for. For filming, the sign was adjusted to read “Rink-O-Mania,” and the website still reflects the old name Roller King (fun fact: a manager taught extras how to skate). Meanwhile, the Lenora Hills High School where El has relocated with the Byers family is played by Eldorado High School. For other filming locations, check out this Netflix in your Neighborhood map.

3. Fort Worth, TX | "1883"

The first two episodes of 1883, the prequel to Yellowstone, were filmed in Fort Worth’s Historic Stockyards District, where cowboys once worked the steers and established ranches and where today you can get a taste of that history. Here are a few of the filming locations: the Hooker’s Grill was turned into a gambling den (and still sports the façade the 1883 production team built for it), the Tattoo Ranch became a livery and the Church of the Open Door, the Alps Building served as the Pinkerton detective agency office, and the Cody Building was the Hotel Calhoun where the fictional Duttons spent their first night in Fort Worth. The cattle pens, too, can be seen throughout the episodes.

4. New Paltz, NY | "Upload"

The historic (1869) Mohonk Mountain House features in Upload, the sci-fi comedy series on Amazon Prime from Greg Daniels, who brought us The Office. This Victorian hotel just 90 minutes from New York City and surrounded by forests is used as the setting for Lakeview, an afterlife resort set in the year 2033. Upload began airing in May 2020 and the most recent season dropped in 2022. It’s been renewed for a third season. You can also see this resort on Season 5’s episode “The Chris Rock Test” of Showtime’s Billions, which aired from 2020 to 2021.

5. Petaluma, CA | "A Hollywood Christmas"

Lucky Petaluma: its cute downtown fueled not one but three Christmas movies streamed via HBO Max last year at Christmas time. Ali Afshar and his movie production company ESX Entertainment shot A Hollywood Christmas, A Christmas Mystery—which stars The Office’s Oscar Nuñez—and Holiday Harmony—which stars Brooke Shields—there. Afshar also shot the movie Casa Grande, which is streaming on FreeVee, in Petaluma and in nearby Sonoma. Finally, War of the Wills on Amazon Prime was filmed at a vintage house in Petaluma, a motel in Sonoma and a cafe in Windsor.

At JFK Airport, you can visit the wondrous TWA Hotel, which was once the TWA terminal and hosts a lot of fun attractions, including a parked jet called the Connie that's now a cocktail lounge. The hotel appears in the last season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as the main character steps out of a taxi in front of the iconic Eero Saarinen structure with its Jet Age architecture and then goes inside to walk its beautiful curving walkways.

7. Yosemite National Park, CA | "Marry Me in Yosemite"

Last year’s Hallmark movie Marry Me in Yosemite was filmed inside Yosemite, as well as featuring two businesses in gateway town Oakhurst. Those include Alpenglow, a local gear shop that played a local gear shop in the film (tough casting call), and the Snowline Saloon, which was used as a restaurant. Filming restrictions within the park meant only eight crew members, including the actors, could be accommodated—see the great views of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls and the meadows in Yosemite Valley.

8. Río Grande, Puerto Rico | "Fantasy Island"

This island isn't fantasy; you can stay there! The modern reboot of the 1970s show Fantasy Island, which aired from 2021 to22 was filmed at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Río Grande. Other filming sites included the Botanical Garden of Río Piedras and the Escambrón Marine Park. Meanwhile, 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was also filmed in various spots around Puerto Rico. One was the Ritz-Carlton San Juan, which permanently closed in 2017 due to damage from Hurricane Maria, but the film crew was able to use the hotel for cinematic purposes (and there’s talk of a possible reopening later this year). And that spectacular beach? Playa Las Palmas in Manatí.

Go to the rooftop restaurant Sant’olina atop the Beverly Hilton to see where romantic forays were held. Episode 2 of The Bachelorette’s upcoming season was shot there with contestants enjoying a date night. The show premieres on July 3. This hotel also gets credit for being the place where the Golden Globes are held each year. In the Aqua Star Pool, Angeline Jolie famously jumped in—and pulled in a reporter—while wearing her fabulous gown, following her win in 1999.

10. Redding, CA | "Dresden Sun"

Last year, Christina Ricci and Mena Suvari were in Redding to film Dresden Sun. This sci-fi heist movie hasn’t been released yet; it’s still in post-production. But in the meantime, you can head to Redding to see several of the filming locations. These include downtown, City Hall and the Civic Auditorium. The futuristic cyberpunk movie looks enticing—and Redding, which is a 1.5-hour flight from Burbank via Avelo, may become an affordable Hollywood North.

11. Sacramento, CA | "Sacramento"

Not yet released, the road trip movie Sacramento stars Kristen Stewart and Michael Cera. Not surprisingly given its name, the movie was filmed at many places in Sacramento. The city’s “Old Sacramento” area with wooden sidewalks near the riverfront and the locally loved Gunther’s Ice Cream shop are featured, as are spots in East Sacramento, the 27-block long R Street Corridor and downtown.

12. Washington Heights, NYC | "In the Heights"

Before there was Hamilton, there was In The Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s love letter to his neighborhood. A live musical first and later released on film in 2021, the movie is set in the Dominican-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan. Here, you can visit “Little Dominican Republic” and shop fruit stands at La Plaza de Las Americas, explore the newly renovated Hispanic Society Museum & Library, as well as hop over to The Met Cloisters and The United Palace. The Dominican-inspired Radio Hotel opened last year with an 8,000 square-foot courtyard where locals and hotel guests are invited to dance as if they were in the movie; a live summer music series provides the rhythm.
