These are all very interesting, but I think of a special, largely unknown place, as a secret of the city. That is Fort Schuyler in the Bronx. Fort Schuyler is on the campus of NY Maritime College (part of SUNY). It is a 19th century fort with thick walls and slit windows facing the sound, basically pentagon in shape. It was designed to protect New York City from an invasion from Long Island Sound. SUNY Maritime is under the Bronx end of the Throgs Neck Bridge. It may be in some guide books, but other than faculty and students of SUNY Maritime, nobody that I know seems to be aware of it.
