Michael Shaowanasai’s latest solo exhibition spans painting, photography, performance, installation and participation, all laced with dark humour. Drawing on different periods of the artist’s life, the works take familiar things – language, food, photographs, beliefs and cultural symbols – and place them in new contexts. Jokes turn slightly uncomfortable; ordinary objects raise bigger questions about how we assign meaning and value. Michael also prepared a special food menu for opening day. Expect plenty to examine, read and question as you move through the show.
August 24-September 30. Free entry. Blacklist Gallery, MATDOT Art Center. 10am-6pm
