One of central Bangkok’s nicest parks has become even more attractive as it hosts new art installations and a lot of workshops as part of Unfolding Bangkok, a series of state-backed events that’s aimed at showcasing the many dimensions of the city through art of various kinds.

The latest to be revealed is Unfolding Bangkok: Greeting Benchakitti. Curator Angkrit Ajchariyasophon has invited five prominent local artists to create meaningful, site-specific sculptures that parkgoers can enjoy and immerse themselves in.

All installations will be displayed until 23 April. Free art workshops will also be hosted every weekend.

The Circle Biogenesis 2023

Suriya Amphansirirat reimagines the harmony of nature, life, and the universe through an upcycled metal installation that features three circular trays, all of which contain a growing rice paddy. Each tray is meant to symbolize eight hours in a day (three to depict all 24 hours in one day), while the rice symbolizes solar-powered food that are essential for humans to survive.

Stingless Bee City

Wit Pimkarnchanaphong shows how stingless bees are crucial to the ecosystem through a massive tower of wooden boxes, inspired by the condo buildings that loom over the park. These boxes serve as a home to these tiny and harmless insects, similar to how condos serve humans.

Hornbill Villa

Inspired by hornbills that only live in peaceful forests, Nino Saraputra, together with the clay artists in Nakhon Phanom, has created 200 clay pots that will become habitats and safe havens for birds and creatures that want to escape urban development and the city’s bustling streets.

The Center of the Universe

Architect Attaporn Konkongsanti has created a life-sized circle made of up colorful rectangles. It is similar to a kaleidoscope in both looks and purpose—this installation invites you to see Benchakitti Park in different colors and in a new way.
