The best movie screenings in Bangkok right now

From wong Kar-wai in Chinatown to free classics in an old printing house, these Bangkok film nights turn a screening into an event

Bangkok’s best film nights rarely happen in a multiplex. They might take over  a Shanghai-style mansion on Yaowarat or an old printing house on Charoen Krung.

The city’s screening calendar has become one of its more interesting cultural offerings – not only for the films, though some are rare, but for where and how you watch them.

Think of this less as a listings page than a running diary of Bangkok film nights worth pencilling in: screenings where the setting is as memorable as the screen, the story behind the film is part of the draw and the evening offers more than simply sitting through a movie.

Use it as a starting point, and check the latest booking details before heading out.

Following (1998) at House Samyan

House Samyan is marking its 22nd anniversary with a genuine rarity: the Thai theatrical premiere of Following, Christopher Nolan's 1998 debut feature. Shot in black and white on weekends over the course of a year, the low-budget noir already shows his fascination with fractured timelines and unreliable narrators – instincts that would shape the rest of his career, right through to The Odyssey, opening in the same month.

A limited theatrical run of a major director’s debut does not come around often, and this one may be gone before most people realise it has arrived.

Where: House Samyan, 5/F Samyan Mitrtown, South zone

When: From July 16, with only a handful of screenings

Tickets: Book via the House Cinema app, housesamyan.com or the fifth-floor box office.

Saturday Night Fever (1977) at Sala Saneha

Sala Saneha is not so much screening Saturday Night Fever as bringing it to life. The film sets up a full-blown disco, DJs ป๋าเต็ด (Ted Yuthana) and Ekception on decks before and after, wine in hand and a dress code that rules out anything as dull as everyday clothes.

It’s a one-night-only party rather than a season, so do not overthink it: dress up, turn up and hit the floor.

Where: Sala Saneha

When: July 18, evening

Tickets: B300, disco dress strongly encouraged.

Sunday Cinema at Bangkok Kunsthalle

Bangkok Kunsthalle has turned its screening room, inside the old Thai Wattana Panich printing house on Charoen Krung, into a free, fortnightly cinema for the rest of the year. Curated by Rosalia ‘Namsai’ Engchuan, the programme travels through postwar Japan, the Amazon, Mongolia, rural Thailand and present-day Italy, pairing Thai classics with acclaimed international films. The line-up includes 2046, Fitzcarraldo, Drive My Car, Shoplifters and Perfect Days.

Free entry is rare for a programme this thoughtfully assembled, while the venue’s exposed industrial bones add another layer to whatever’is on the screen that week.

Where: Bangkok Kunsthalle Screening Room, Charoen Krung

When: Every other Sunday from July 19 to December; screenings start at 5.30pm

Tickets: Free, but reserve ahead via Ticketmelon. Seats are limited and bookings are checked at the door.
