The 'hot bus' has been part of Bangkok's self-image for decades. Now they face their biggest shake-up yet, as the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) prepares to bring in 1,520 electric air-conditioned buses to replace the same number of the old ones.
The first 500 arrive in March 2027, and the rest of the fleet follows by May 2027. To start with, the electric buses run on nearly 50 of the roughly 107 lines the BMTA operates.
Those 50-odd lines split two ways. City Bus routes stay inside town, from the loops that circle Bangkok to the ones threading through Silom, Bang Rak, Khlong Toei and Rama IV. Commuter Bus routes do the longer haul, linking the suburbs to the centre so the daily trip in gets a bit easier. The BMTA is also redrawing some of its network, and the Department of Land Transport wants that work sped up so each line suits the new buses.
On board you get air-conditioning, plus CCTV, GPS tracking and proper access for wheelchair users and anyone who struggles with steps.
This runs deeper than a cold breeze, though. It rethinks how the BMTA pays for everything, moving from buying buses outright and covering repairs itself to leasing the whole service from private operators. On paper it is cheaper and tidier, and it marks a real shift in how the city funds public transport.
Here is the catch, and it matters for regular riders. The hot buses charge a flat B8 start to finish. The electric replacements sit under a distance-based fare of B15-25.
None of this is as simple as parking new buses where the old ones sat. It touches lines, depots, charging points, maintenance crews, seating and safety. The trickiest part is the money. How do you give people cleaner, cooler, more modern buses without pricing out the ones who rely on them most?
So if you have peeled your shirt off one too many bus seats, start practising your goodbye wave. Bangkok is about to get a little cooler.
