Nearly 50 years after Elvis Presley’s death, the quiff, the voice and the hip-swivelling swagger still need little introduction. The King of Rock and Roll remains one of pop culture’s most instantly recognisable figures – and this August, Bangkok is marking his legacy with two free films on the big screen.
His voice, stage presence and screen career helped propel rock and roll into the mainstream, turning Elvis from singer to cultural phenomenon and reshaping the look and sound of popular music in the process.
To mark the anniversary of his death, the Thai Film Archive (Public Organisation) has teamed up with the Thai Film Foundation for a two-night tribute at historic Sala Chaloem Thani, better known as Nang Loeng Cinema. The screenings run August 15-16.
August 15: Elvis (2022)
First up is the biopic that brought Presley’s story back to the big screen for a new generation, charting his rise to global superstardom. It earned widespread critical praise and eight Oscar nominations.
August 16: Blue Hawaii (1961)
The double bill closes with one of Elvis’s biggest box-office hits, in which he plays a soldier returning home to Hawaii. Its soundtrack includes ‘Can't Help Falling in Love’, still one of his best-known songs.
Both screenings start at 4pm and are free. Tickets are available at the door from 3pm on a first-come, first-served basis, with no online booking. The cinema seats 250 and will close its doors once full. There’s no parking on site, so take public transport.
