September in Bangkok means rain, and plenty of it. Rather than sulk under an umbrella all month, though, let a live orchestra handle the soundtrack. Lumphini Hall opens its doors for a run of free weekend concerts, staged in the park while the wet season hammers away outside.
The programme spreads across three afternoons, moving from big band jazz to classical arrangements and traditional Thai music, all of it a short walk from the skytrain and none of it costing a baht.
Here's what's on:
- Big Band Sound by BBB (Bangkok Big Band), Saturday, September 12, 5pm-7pm
- Nut Letana & BMO by the Bangkok Metropolitan Orchestra, Saturday, September 19, 5pm-7pm
- Enjoying the Arts with Lumpini Youth (Bangkok Thai Music Ensemble and Khlong Toei Youth Center), Sunday, September 20, 5pm-7pm
Admission costs nothing, so it's an easy one to turn up to on a whim. Getting there is simple, too. Take the BTS to Sala Daeng (exit 6) and cross the skywalk straight to the entrance, or ride the MRT to Silom (exit 1) or Lumphini (exit 3) and you land more or less at the gates.
The concerts run at Lumphini Hall, Lumphini Park, from September 12-20. Entry is free.
