Downtown news alert: Two popular establishments in one of Bangkok’s liveliest and most popular districts recently reopened following major renovations. The InterContinental Bangkok Hotel and Erawan Bangkok shopping center in Ratchaprasong have been welcoming back guests since 1 June, but both are still on soft opening, so don’t expect everything to function perfectly.

Though it still looks the same from the outside, the long-standing InterContinental Bangkok is a completely different hotel once you enter its sliding doors. Its interiors, from the spacious foyer, to the magnificent chandeliers and matching bespoke carpet, to the rooms and suites with teal wallpaper, furnishings, and beddings, are all new and give off a more modern feel. The iconic grand staircase is still there, however, as well as the restaurants you love, such as Fireplace Grill, Balcony, Espresso, and cigar room Humidor. Plus, there’s a new dining outlet called SoCal, which is churning out Southern California cuisine. Summer Palace, the hotel’s famed Chinese restaurant, will reopen soon.

Across the street, Erawan Bangkok, the luxurious shopping and lifestyle destination right behind the Brahma statue, has also reopened its doors, unveiling new artsy designs. Though many spaces are far from finished, you can still check out the main atrium, which is now decked with an immersive lighting installation that falls from the top to the bottom floors. The elegant Thai restaurant Erawan Tea Room is back in the same spot on the second floor and still serves Thai favorites made with carefully selected ingredients. The first floor is now home to a multidisciplinary exhibition Scene Erawan: Destiny where 20 artists of different genres come together to explore the concept of destiny and what is destined.
