Bangkok's heat doesn't exactly encourage lofty plans, so an open-air film night by the river sounds about right. Over three evenings from May 9-11, LHONG 1919 marks the birthday of the Mazu Goddess with a line-up of free screenings set against the Chao Phraya's steady breeze. It kicks off at 6pm each day, two films per night, and the vibe stays easy.

The setting does half the work. Lanterns glow, wooden facades creak quietly with age, and the river carries on as it always does. Grab a cold drink, claim a spot in the courtyard and let the evening sort itself out. The programme covers a bit of everything, from blockbuster spectacle to Thai crowd-pleasers, so it works for mixed groups who can't quite agree on what to watch.

Hop on the BTS Skytrain to Krung Thon Buri, then continue by taxi or motorbike. Boats also run across the river, which actually suits the setting better. However you arrive, aim for early evening, settle in before the first screening and let the night take its time.
