Bangkok's stage scene gets a playful shake-up this June, and it's not your usual theatre lineup. A riotously inventive puppet theatre festival returns to the city, gathering Thai and international artists for a weekend that swaps screens for strings, shadows and a fair bit of stagecraft wizardry.
Puppet Slam in Bangkok, the third Bangkok Contemporary Puppet Theatre Festival, brings together more than 20 troupes under one roof, each working at a different edge of the form. What began in 1978 in the United States as a modest meet-up by the Bread & Puppet group now lands as a global showcase, with short-form performances that favour bold ideas, quick turns and close-up storytelling.
You'll see five distinct approaches to puppetry, each with its own language:
Hand Puppet: Performers slip a hand inside the figure, giving it a quick, lively rhythm. Movement stays tight and expressive, often playful, sometimes cheeky, always direct.
Shadow Play: Light does the heavy lifting here. Figures pass across a lit screen, stretching and shrinking as distance shifts, building images that hover somewhere between dream and illusion.
Marionette: Suspended by strings and guided from above, these figures demand proper precision. Every step, tilt and pause reads with a quiet, almost human grace.
Object Theatre: Everyday items step up as characters. A cup, a shoe, a scrap of fabric, all reimagined through timing and perspective, often landing with a clever twist.
Mask Performance: Expression moves from face to body. Masks fix the emotion, while posture, gesture and rhythm carry the story.
