Today (30 April) at The Ministry of Culture, Netflix announces its corporation with SK Global Entertainment (the producer of Crazy Rich Asians and Delhi Crime) to portray the story behind the rescue mission of the Wild Boar soccer team consisting of 12 boys and 1 soccer coach from Tham Luang Cave, the two-week incident which made local and international news headline during Thai monsoon season last year.

Soon to be co-directed by Jon M. Chu of Crazy Rich Asians and Thai director Nattawut Poonpiriya of Bad Genius, the currently-untitled film was granted the rights by 13 Thumluang Company Limited (the company representing the boys, reportedly founded by coach Ekkapol Chantapong and the parents of the boys), and will focus on the heroic storyline that involves local and international team such as the Thai Navy Seal and experienced international divers who took part in the nerve-wrecking and hazardous rescue mission.

At this stage, the information about the cast, the plot, the format and the time frame of the production is not yet revealed, but the film is expected to be “a thank you letter to the rest of the world”, as commented by Nattawut Poonpiriya.

Netflix declined to discuss the amount of the compensation the boys will get from the film.
