Royal Gems City Golf

What is it?: Royal Gems Golf City, located about 45 mins drive north from central Bangkok, blends world-class design with a playful twist. This Ron Garl course offers two distinct nines: the front nine recreates famous holes from legendary courses around the world, while the back pays homage to Augusta National’s revered back nine. The clubhouse is spacious with panoramic views of the course. Locker rooms are spotless, and the pro shop is well-stocked with quality gear and apparel.

Why we love it: The front nine is a tour of some of the greatest golf holes in the world. You’ll find yourself teeing off on replicas from St Andrews, Pebble Beach and TPC Sawgrass, among others. The famous island green of Sawgrass’ 17th hole is recreated with impressive accuracy, offering the same nerve-tingling shot over water. The back nine is modelled after Augusta National’s back nine, capturing the challenge of the Masters’ most memorable moments. The par-3 12th, with its narrow green guarded by Rae’s Creek, demands precision, while the par-5 13th tempts longer hitters to go for the green in two. Landscaping with flowering plants, manicured bunkers and water features do a pretty decent job of making you think you are playing the Masters.

Signature hole: As the course comprises 18 signature holes this is a tough one. But how can it not be the par 3 12th hole replica at Augusta. Statistics show only 50 peer cent, or so, of golfers make the green at Augusta and the same goes for Royal Gems City. A high fade is needed to hold the green and a par here really is worth a high five.

Time out tip: Make a day of it. The restaurant serves a mix of Thai and international cuisine, perfect for a post-round meal. The driving range and practice greens are well-maintained, so arrive early for a warm up before your tee time. Avoid weekends when it can get over-crowded.
