What is it?: The Thai Country Club, located just outside Bangkok off the Bangna Trat highway and designed by Denis Griffiths, was opened in 1996 as a members-only club. Guests can now play at certain times during the week, either arranged through a hotel concierge or via a golf tour operator. The clubhouse amenities and services, in addition to a well-maintained course, are what sets it above the rest. It has hosted numerous prestigious international tournaments and a plaque on the par 4 10th hole proudly recalls the 1997 Asia Honda classic when Tiger Woods drove the green on his way to a 10-stroke win.
Why we love it: Thai Country Club is relatively flat but course maintenance is perhaps the best in the kingdom and greens are a pleasure to put on. The layout offers a fair challenge to golfers of all levels and professional on-course management ensures that, even at peak time, play flows at a decent pace. Service from bag drop to pro shop and locker rooms to restaurants is top notch and the drinks huts are well stocked while the restaurant is one of the best among the kingdom’s golf courses.
Signature hole: Hole 6 is a 227-yard par 3 from the tips and 136 yards from the reds. Typically, into the wind with water along the right side of the fairway and in front of the green, and out of bounds to the left. A high fade is required for right-handers if you want to hold this green.
Time Out tip: Build time into your visit to enjoy some of the best golfing hospitality in the Bangkok vicinity. Aim to arrive 90 minutes before tee time or stay 90 minutes after, or better still: both.
