While Fourth of July may not be a national holiday in Bangkok, it falls on a weekend, making it the ideal time for anyone to experience America without flying halfway around the world. Add on a decent number of US expats all rearing to cheer on 250 years of independence, there’s really no reason not to join in.

This year, Bangkok goes all out with rooftop fireworks, boat celebrations, all-American BBQ feasts and live music that would make Uncle Sam proud. So whether you’re an American missing home or just here for the food and festivities, there’s an event for everyone. Lobsterbacks included.

Whatever you are feeling – whether it's a family fun day or a late night party – here’s our top picks for America’s big day, Thailand style.

  • Rattanakosin

This year, why not spend the Fourth of July on a boat? No tea tossing required. Bangkok Island – our city’s most famous party river club – is serving up a lively cookout aboard deck with great food, drinks and waterfront vibes as standard. Best of all, the event is free and everyone is welcome – no catches, but reservations are encouraged in case it reaches capacity. Don't worry if you can't swim or tend to get motion sickness, the boat will stay docked all night, so you can enjoy the atmosphere without ever having to set sail. The only splash will be made by DJ Pableroy (Lyrical Lunacy) and Mackyvely (Afro Kommunity) bringing hip hop, high-energy sets to keep the night alive.

Tony’s may be an Italian-American restaurant but its Fourth of July party is pure Americana. Start off strong with a menu you can’t go wrong with like smoked BBQ and smash burgers – but why only eat when you can compete? Take part in the hot dog eating contest, beer pong and biggest burger challenge to test your patriotism and even win a prize. Once you can’t eat anymore, join the country dance lessons and dance the night away. Come ready for some fun and friendly competition and don’t forget to wear red, white or blue to join the hourly giveaways.

Celebrate this Independence Day at this massive backyard-style bash, letting you forgo all the cooking and grilling yourself this year. The Upper Deck Sports Bar is hosting an all-day, all-you-can-eat BBQ buffet on their open-air rooftop terrace. The feast includes unlimited classic American BBQ, fried fish, deviled eggs, fruit salad and fresh cookies. Kids can enjoy the s’mores bar while adults can enjoy something a little harder, with over 29 ice-cold beers on tap. The buffet runs all day too, starting at noon and running late into the evening, allowing you to really gorge on multiple rounds of food in true American fashion. Alongside the food, there’s live music from 4pm, followed by a resident DJ set that goes well into the evening hours.

  • Things to do
  • Din Daeng

Fatty’s Bar & Diner is a Wisconsin-American themed ‘dive bar’ in Din Daeng and is as American as it gets. As you’d imagine, their Fourth of July party would make any lobster blush, with live music all day featuring Moons and Dust, Lonestar Lament and Matthew Fischer – three classic Americana rock bands to keep freedom flowing. Alongside corn dogs, Italian beef sandwiches and plenty of other classic American comfort foods, this full day of music, food and laid-back celebration proudly brings a taste of the Midwest to Bangkok. Come see for yourself whether or not they’ve got the stereotypes correct.

Buddy’s Bar & Grill puts the ‘free’ in freedom for their Fourth of July event with an all-American feast – think hot dogs, burgers, potato salad, chili, corn and ice cream, all for free. No joke! The event kicks off at 7.30pm and continues until the food runs out, so get there early if you want to feast like a true American. And it’s not just at one venue. The feast spans their two most popular spots, the more central Soi 8 and Soi 89’s pool-focused hangout, both perfect for those that want to drink, play and truly roleplay that diner-bar evening experience. Come for the free food but stay for the good vibes and cold drinks at this classic Americana bar, transplanted into Bangkok.

Nothing says Fourth of July quite like the fizz of fireworks lighting up the night sky. And while Bangkok may not be as colourful as the skies of Manhattan, La Mesa Coffee Co. is throwing a family-friendly celebration that will include all the favourite classics like lawn games, music, good food and a handful of mini fireworks and sparklers to really get into that Fourth feel. Adults get true American-sized portions of smoked chicken BBQ, homemade mac and cheese and a side salad (to balance out the carbs), along with a sweet-as-peaches choice of dessert, while kids aged 12 years and under swap the smoke for classic nuggies. Dinner starts at 7pm with fireworks booming around 8.15pm.

Instead of roasting meat, join in on an American roasting session in celebration of the Fourth with laughter and a little sarcasm on the side. Patriots beware, Arcadia Barcade’s stand-up comedy show is not for snowflakes – with Americans Alex Latour (the host), Le’Ana Freeman, Teddy Mulvagh, Graham Elwood and Daniel Holmes all leading the roast. There’s even one brave British soul, Kenny Simmons, already deemed the ‘Token Redcoat’ and likely the scapegoat if things get rowdy enough. Doors open at 8pm and the show starts promptly at 8.30pm, so no tardiness allowed. With limited seats, reserve your tickets early for B500 or pay extra at the door. Every ticket comes with a free drink and a serving of satire.
