Japan’s alt-rock scene is having a moment, and right now its loudest pulse belongs to a four-piece fronted by Yohei Kawakami on vocals and guitar, Hiroyuki Iwabe on bass, Masaki Shirai on guitar and Kaede Takeshi behind the drums. They’ve built a reputation on contradiction – songs that can shift from shoegaze melancholy to punk snarl in the space of a verse, before folding in a kind of fragile lyricism that feels distinctly Japanese. You could think Britrock swagger put through a Tokyo filter, then turned up to eleven. Bangkok gets its chance to see the phenomenon live, where the calm precision of the studio gives way to sweat, volume and the unspoken promise that something might combust on stage.
