If you go down to Zeekoevlei today... you're not in for a big surprise - and we think some people have been watching far too many e.tv movies following the release of this news!

Rumours started circulating earlier in the week that anacondas had taken over Zeekoevlei.

This created a bit of panic on social media, with some media houses even reporting on the 'sightings'.

It got so out of hand that it prompted the City of Cape Town to come out and squash the talk of these giant snakes infesting the freshwater lake.

Their response can be seen below:

So, just to confirm, folks, there are no anacondas in Zeekoevlei and you can sleep easy tonight.

Tell me then, where do anacondas live?

Anacondas are native to the tropical rainforests of South America, with countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia known for their anaconda populations.

The semi-aquatic snakes prefer to spend their time in the water and eat anything from big prey such as jaguars, caimans, capybaras, and deer to smaller prey such as birds, fish, and turtles.

Where is Zeekoevlei?

Zeekoevlei is located next to the Cape Flats suburbs of Grassy Park, Lotus River and Pelican Park. It is housed within the Zeekoevlei Nature Reserve, which was declared a protected area in 2000.

A direct translation of Zeekoevlei from Afrikaans into English is 'Hippopotamus Pond'. While there are no known hippos that inhabit Zeekoevlei, in the past, hippos have gone on an adventure from nearby Rondevlei Nature Reserve to the lake, but were safely returned.

The reserve is open to the public, where activities such as picnicking, fishing, boating, and birdwatching are enjoyed on a weekly basis.

And, again, no, there are no anacondas in Zeekoevlei, but there is a new movie starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd currently showing in cinemas...
