5 amazing things you didn’t know about the Cubs World Series Championship Rings

One of the best parts about winning a major sport’s championship is the bling. On Wednesday, Chicago Cubs players and staff were presented with their 2016 World Series Championship Rings during a ceremony before the night's game. The rings, made of 14-karat white gold, have some pretty cool features— not to mention hundreds of diamonds, rubies and sapphires. From hidden messages to not-so cursed goats, these are the amazing details you might not have noticed on the Cubs World Series Championship Rings.

It tells the time

If you were too emotional to remember the exact time the Cubs made history, this ring has you covered. Not only does it tell you the date and time that the Cubs won Game 7 (11-3-2016, 12:47am), the Championship Ring also features the series scores and logos of the three teams the Cubs beat on their way to win the World Series.

Everybody gets one

And, we mean everybody—players, coaches, owners, executives, Hall of Famers; even late greats Ernie Banks and Ron Santo. If you were a member of the Cubs organization in 2016 or an elite former member of the team, you got a ring. In all, the Cubs presented 1,908 pieces of championship hardware.

There's a lot of bling

Each ring contains 214 diamonds, 33 genuine red rubies and 46 genuine blue sapphires. With nearly 2,000 rings produced, ring designer Jostens used more than 400,000 diamonds and about 150,000 gemstones.

So many symbols

Cubs history (check), Wrigley Field (check), the "W Flag" (check)—if you've ever been to a Cubs game, chances are this ring contains some reference to your visit. Theo Epstein, Tom Ricketts and Crane Kenney led the ring's design committee and they literally left no stone unturned. There are 108 round white diamonds that represent the 108-year drought, two princess-cut diamonds that represent the team’s two previous World Series titles, and silhouette images of Wrigley Field’s bricks and ivy as an added touch.

And, it's got the goat

There is no Cubs symbol more representative of the team's World Series woes than the goat. That might be why the Cubs (perhaps looking to perform a bit of chaos magic) included the infamous billy goat in the ring's design. We think it looks a bit like the sigil of a Game of Thrones house.
