Chefs, restaurateurs and industry experts galore gathered at the Civic Opera House tonight for the annual James Beard Foundation Awards. This year, we’re proud to announce that two Chicago nominees took home winning titles.

Topolobampo won outstanding restaurant, an award bestowed upon Alinea in 2016. This is Topolobampo’s first James Beard award, though the Rick Bayless-helmed restaurant has received nominations in years past. Bayless, who also celebrated Frontera’s 30th anniversary this weekend, is having quite the week.

Congratulations is also in order for Sarah Grueneberg of Monteverde, who won best chef – Great Lakes. Chicago swept the award for a second year in a row, with Curtis Duffy of Grace taking home the honor last year. Grueneberg’s acclaimed, heartfelt takes on Italian cuisine are certainly worthy of the recognition.
