The three best things to do today in Chicago

1. Swim through the holidays

Johnnyswim performs songs from its holiday album, A Johnnyswim Christmas, as well as a few old favorites at Thalia Hall tonight. Made up of husband and wife duo Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano, the band's catalog of slick pop songs is guaranteed to take advantage of the excellent acoustics of one of Chicago's best music venues. (Thalia Hall, 1807 S Allport St, 7pm. $25, balcony $37, opera box $306)

2. Meet a comedian

Get to know your local comedy scene at Comedians You Should Know, a weekly comedy night that highlights local talent from all around Chicago. Who knows, you might just spot the next up-and-coming Hannibal Buress. (Timothy O'Toole's, 622 N Fairbanks Ct, 9pm. $10, advance $5)

3. Watch a seasonal slasher

Local H frontman and film aficionado Scott Lucas hosts the Acquired Taste Cult Movie Night, a monthly screening of cult flicks on the Virgin Hotel's 25th floor. The best part: It's completely free and open to the public. Popcorn and beer are for sale and Lucas provides commentary after (and sometimes during) the films. This time around, attendees will enjoy the 1974 holiday slasher Black Christmas. (Virgin Hotels Chicago, 203 N Wabash Ave, 7pm. Free)
