Kamasi Washington + Makaya McCraven

September 9, Bottom Lounge
After years spent as a session musician recording with the likes of Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar, saxophonist Kamasi Washington has finally unleashed his magnum opus on the world. His latest solo record, clocking in at nearly three hours and aptly titled The Epic, is both a nod to traditional jazz and a calculated attempt to imagine the genre's future. Local drummer and bandleader Makaya McCraven opens the show, playing with a band that features Jeff Parker on guitar and Joshua Ramos on bass. ($20, 17+)

Ultimate Painting + CoCoComa

September 10, Empty Bottle
The straight-ahead guitar pop of London duo Ultimate Painting may not be cutting-edge, but that doesn't make the cozy, '70s-inspired melodies that grace its new record, Green Lanes, any less infectious. Signed to Chicago label Trouble in Mind, the band headlines the Bottle after Earth and Disappears get done making noise in the Bohemian National Cemetery. Local garage-punks CoCoComa support, playing what might be its last show as guitarist Anthony Cozzi ships off to the West Coast. ($10, 21+)

Radiation City + The Lower 48

September 13, Schubas
Comprised of a pair of couples, there's an inherent intimacy present in the breezy, synth-tinged pop of Radiation City. The Portland band's 2013 release, Animals in the Median, bristled with layered harmonies and slick DIY production. Now, the group is heading out on tour behind an unreleased third album, produced by John Vanderslice. Blues rock trio (and fellow Portland residents) the Lower 48 opens the show. ($12, 21+)
