With their new bassist and fresh material, Frank Black and Pixies return to a sold-out house in Chicago

Critics have been rough on the Pixies lately. For the last decade, the iconic '80s indie band has hit the reunion circuit, playing all the loud-quiet-loud classics that led to Nirvana. In recent months, beloved bassist Kim Deal leaves the fold, and new material finally surfaces, material that some rock writers, to put it mildly, have defecated upon after a ritual bloodletting. It's rather ridiculous. The songs on EP 1 and EP 2 sound like what the Pixies would have made in the mid-'90s—or actually just like what Frank Black was recording circa Cult of Ray. More power to 'em. You can only play "Debaser" over and over for so long (12 years) before thinking, Hey, maybe we should write something new.

Well, Pixies still bring out "Debaser," of course, but the new tunes slip into the set as well. While Deal is certainly missed, tourist bassist Paz Lenchantin is rad, formerly of Zwan and the Entrance Band.

Columbia Records act Cults opened the night, playing break-up songs from their recent Static.
